The Scottish Deerhound is a large dog with a large heart. This breed of dogs is extremely friendly and active so keeping them healthy should be a top priority. The following are three organs that a Deerhound may experience health issues with and along with it are the ways to prevent them from occurring:

Heart

A common disorder that Deerhounds encounter is Cardiomyopathy (literally meaning heart muscle disease) that has unknown causes. If left untreated, it usually progresses to heart failure and is fatal to the dog. Prevention of this condition starts with a balanced diet comprised of low or none fatty food. Exercise should be done in a daily basis like brisk walking. Strenuous activities such as prolonged running should be avoided as to prevent the heart from being overworked. Have your Deerhound regularly checked by the vet to monitor onset or progression of this disease.

Stomach

Another health issue would be bloat or gastric torsion which is very common to deep-chested dog breeds like the Deerhound. This is the condition where the stomach gets filled with gas, distends, and becomes twisted making it difficult for the gas to pass. It is also fatal to the dog and is considered as an emergency. Preventing this from happening consists of feeding your Deerhound several small meals in a day rather than one big meal. It would also help if exercise or physical activity were delayed before and after eating.

Bone

One more health problem your Deerhound may encounter would be Osteosarcoma or leg bone cancer. It is a painful condition where the cancer destroys the bone from inside out. The cause of this disorder is unfortunately unknown.

By being informed of these health issues and the conditions that comes with it you as a responsible pet owner can take care of your dog more responsibly.

This dog is so happy and lively that he is jumping almost like a cat. This breed is very energetic and requires a lot of exercise. The best living environment for these dogs is a house with a big garden or yard where they can run freely all day. Scottish Deerhounds are good with other family pets and they love children.

I would say definitely yes, if you would like to have a dog that is loyal, devoted and courageous. They are also tolerant, so they are the perfect pets for a family even with small children. The Scottish Deerhound can get on well with other dogs and pets – except for really little ones – in the house as well. This breed requires a lot of exercise, so at least a daily walk or run is advised. They are the happiest with a large, fenced yard where they can play and run all day.

The coat of the Scottish Deerhound is short, shaggy and wiry that requires very little, occasional care with a firm brush. They are average shedders. Sadly, this breed has a relatively short lifespan: 8-9 years and they are prone to health issues like bone cancer, bloat or torsion.

Training of this breed is hard, as the Scottish Deerhound is a very slow learner. They require consistent, calm and firm training methods, as well as much patience for the long learning time. These dogs usually do not do well in obedience, however, they are easy to housebreak. Therefore obedience training and socialization is a must from the very early ages.

All in all, the Scottish Deerhound is the perfect dog for big families even with small children, if they would like to have a quiet, loving and very devoted, furry friend by their side.

I hope this short article will help you decide whether the Scottish Deerhound is the perfect breed for you.

Scottish Deerhounds are definitely not for those people, who long for an obsequious dog, which follows the human no matter what. This breed carries the basic characteristics of a hound: commanding, dignified, lazy at indoor places, but very active outdoors. They are usually called “sofa dogs” too, due to being so lazy sometimes.
Fans of this breed like mentioning the famous sentence of Sir Walter Scott, referring to Scottish Deerhounds: “the most perfect creation” . It may sound a but too much at first, but if one spends only a few hours with these lovely dogs, they can experience the dignified loyalty and charm they have.
