This dog is a gentle, elegant and polite type and is friendly to family and strangers as well. It would be a bit difficult to believe that they were first bred to take down the Scottish roe deer which was more than twice their size.  Nowadays, these dogs enjoy long walks and running free in open spaces and spending the afternoons relaxing with their masters.  Being a responsible owner, it would be best to know other aspects of the breed. Especially if one was thinking of breeding.  Just how many puppies are expected from the Deerhound’s litter? Suffice to say, the breed can have between 8 to 9 puppies. But owners should not expect them to be watchdogs because their instincts to be polite, docile and gentle may not bring them up to par.
